What is Truvada?

For about 40 years, HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) has been a global public health crisis. The virus attacks healthy cells in your body that fight infection. Having the virus can make you more susceptible to other diseases and infections, such as AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome).

At this time, there is no effective cure for HIV or AIDS. However, medical research has resulted in several medications used to treat the conditions. One of the newer medications to treat HIV is Truvada.

Drugs such as Truvada are being used to try to control the spread of HIV. Doctors may also prescribe Truvada with other HIV drugs to treat the symptoms of the disease.

Truvada contains the drugs Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate (TDF) and Emtricitabine (FTC). These components can help control HIV development in patients who have tested positive for HIV.

Truvada is also being prescribed as a preventative measure against HIV. Individuals who do not have HIV but are at high risk of coming into contact with the virus can take Truvada as a preventative remedy.

Potential Side Effects and Complications of Using Truvada

Truvada has to be taken in high doses to be effective.

TDF, a main component in Truvada, has been linked to numerous complications and side effects, including:

  • Bone fractures
  • Bone deterioration, bone loss, or osteoporosis
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Kidney problems, including decreased urination and declining kidney function
  • Kidney failure
  • Acute renal failure
  • Fanconi Syndrome
  • Tooth loss, tooth decay, and other dental complications

Individuals taking drugs containing TDF have experienced complications and harmful side effects. TDF drugs include Truvada, Viread, Atripla, Complera, and Stribild.

Filing a Truvada Lawsuit Seeking Damages

Filing a Truvada Lawsuit

Gilead Sciences manufactures Truvada. Existing Truvada lawsuits claim that the drug’s manufacturer knew about the dangers of TDF when it marketed the HIV drug. The lawsuits further allege that the company also created an HIV drug known as tenofovir alafenamide fumarate (TAF) around the same time.

TAF can be taken in smaller doses, which is safer for patients. However, Truvada victims claim that Gilead decided to market Truvada first because the patent did not expire until 2015. After that, it began selling TAF-based drugs as an improved version of the TDF-based drugs.

The victims claim that the company knew the TDF drugs were more harmful than the TAF drugs, but it chose profits over consumer safety. The company intentionally exposed consumers to higher risks when it had a safer alternative ready to market.

If the plaintiffs successfully prove a product liability claim’s legal elements, they could receive compensation for damages.

Damages could include:

  • Cost of medical treatment and care
  • Expenses related to personal care and in-home health care
  • Loss of income and benefits, including future wages and decreases in earning potential
  • Disabilities and permanent impairments
  • Pain and suffering damages
  • Loss of quality of life

If you believe you have been harmed after taking Truvada, act now. Your time to file a lawsuit is limited by the Massachusetts statute of limitations
