Car Color & Crash Risk

Car Color & Crash Risk

Purchasing a car is exciting. Many consumers search for vehicles with high safety ratings and features.

Everyone is aware of the dangers that collisions present. But most people do not think about the color of their car as something that affects their safety.

Most car buyers choose a color based only on their personal aesthetic preferences. In some cases, car colors can even make the vehicle more likely to resell at a higher price. However, recent research has shown that certain color vehicles are at a higher risk of accidents than others.

Below, we will discuss the role of car color in determining crash risk. If you or someone that you love has been injured in a car accident, it is critical to contact a skilled attorney.

A car accident lawyer will examine your case and help you fight for maximum compensation. You should not have to face the costs and expenses from a collision that you did not cause, regardless of the color of your vehicle!

The Safety of Car Colors

There are many different colors and shades of vehicles available. Below, we provide a breakdown of the relationship between certain car colors and the risk of accidents.

It is important for consumers to take these facts into account when deciding to purchase a new vehicle.

White Vehicles

In several studies, white cars have been found less likely to be involved in crashes than vehicles of other colors. For example, white cars are 12% less likely to crash than black vehicles.

The reason for the relative safety of white cars is that they stand out on the road. White vehicles do not blend in the way that other cars and trucks do.

When you are driving in a city or rural area, a vehicle that catches the attention of other drivers will help to keep you safe. Oftentimes, collisions are the result of one motorist not being aware of the presence of another vehicle. With a more visible vehicle, you can reduce your risks of an accident.

Yellow Vehicles

Some vehicle safety researchers claim that yellow cars are the safest choice. To support this position, they cite the fact that school buses and taxis are yellow.

Much like white cars and trucks, yellow vehicles stand out. Yellow vehicles are easy for other motorists to notice. This helps to prevent possible collisions and accidents with inattentive drivers.

Orange Vehicles

Orange cars and trucks are relatively rare. But much like other bright and unnatural colors, orange vehicles are very noticeable.

There are almost no objects that are orange in a typical roadway environment. So having an orange vehicle tends to draw the attention of drivers and pedestrians.

Again, visibility is the key component in the relationship between car color and car safety.

Gold Vehicles

Gold is also a very safe color to choose when you’re considering a new car. This is because gold is a highly reflective color. It shimmers and shines. This makes gold vehicles easy for other people to see on the roads.

Black Vehicles

Nearly every study on the subject concludes that black is the most dangerous vehicular color. Black vehicles are more likely than any other kind of car to be involved in collisions and mishaps.

Unsurprisingly, the risks presented by a black car vary according to the time of day. In one study, the authors concluded that black cars increase the chances of a nighttime accident by around 47 percent.

Black cars still present additional risks during the day. Visibility is the key component in the dangers presented by black vehicles.

Black cars and trucks are hard to notice on the road. They tend to blend into the landscape of the roadways. This is true in both rural and urban areas.

When another motorist fails to notice your black vehicle after dark, collisions become much more likely.

Grey Vehicles

Grey cars and trucks also blend into their surroundings. This is especially true in urban settings, where there are many grey buildings and landscape features.

Grey vehicles also offer low visibility in certain weather conditions. Foggy and cloudy weather makes it difficult to see grey cars. Compared to white vehicles, grey cars are 11% more likely to be involved in a crash.

Blue Vehicles

There are many different shades of blue vehicles. Although light blue cars do exist, most blue vehicles tend to be darker in hue.

Dark blue cars are associated with an increased risk of accidents. When the sky is dark, deep blue cars can be difficult to see.

On the other hand, light blue vehicles may blend in against a clear daytime sky.

Red Vehicles

Some consumers avoid buying red cars because they believe that a red vehicle will increase their likelihood of getting stopped by law enforcement. Despite the prevalence of this belief, it is not true.

However, red cars are 7% more likely to be in a crash than are white vehicles. Many traffic-related environmental elements are red, especially in highly trafficked areas.

Consider the following red items that you might see on a typical drive:

  • Stop signs
  • Traffic lights
  • Yield signs
  • First responder lights
  • Fire trucks
  • No parking signs
  • Brake lights

It can be challenging to distinguish between these environmental factors and a red vehicle. For this reason, red cars and trucks face higher rates of accidents.

Silver Cars

The research on silver cars is inconclusive. Some studies state that silver cars are riskier than other colors of vehicles.

One study claims that silver cars are 11% more likely to be involved in collisions than white cars. But other studies disagree.

A recent study from the National Institutes of Health found that silver vehicles were 50% safer than white cars. Silver is a very popular color for new cars, but the jury is still out on how this color affects vehicles’ safety.
