“Experts Warn of Rising Pedestrian Fatalities in Boston and Across the State”

Boston, MA — A tragic spike in pedestrian fatalities has raised concerns in Boston and across Massachusetts. On Tuesday evening, a scooter rider lost their life after being struck by a car at approximately 6:30 pm on Washington Street in Roslindale. In a separate incident during the early hours of Wednesday, around 4:30 am, another pedestrian was fatally hit by a vehicle at the intersection of Hampden Street and Melnea Cass Boulevard in Roxbury. The identities of the victims have not yet been released.
Brendan Kearney, the co-executive director of WalkMassachusetts, highlighted the alarming increase in pedestrian deaths over the past two years. Kearney reported that in 2023 alone, the state witnessed 350 road fatalities, with around 70 of those being pedestrians. He further pointed out the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard as particularly dangerous for all road users.
WalkMassachusetts, the advocacy group where Kearney serves, is dedicated to ensuring the safety of pedestrians within cities and towns statewide. According to the organization, the year 2022 saw a considerable death toll on Massachusetts roads, accounting for roughly 400 fatalities, of which about 100 were pedestrians.
