On Wednesday afternoon, traffic was brought to a standstill on a section of Interstate 495 in Berlin, Massachusetts, following a rollover accident involving a box truck that left the driver with serious injuries. The incident occurred northbound, near Route 62, prompting the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) to issue an advisory around 2 p.m. and state police to close off the northbound lanes for emergency response and investigation.
The Massachusetts State Police reported that the crash happened at approximately 1 p.m. Emergency medical services, including a medical helicopter, responded to the scene. The helicopter landed on the interstate, necessitating the complete closure of the northbound side of I-495. This led to substantial traffic backups, impacting several miles of the highway.
The truck’s cargo was scattered across the highway, covering all three travel lanes. Cleanup efforts were concentrated on clearing the debris, which allowed only the breakdown lane to be used by circumventing vehicles once the helicopter took off with the injured driver. The cleanup and subsequent investigation into the cause of the accident resulted in major traffic delays throughout the afternoon.
By 3:30 p.m., MassDOT updated the public, stating that while I-495 north had partially reopened, with traffic slowly moving in the breakdown lane, the left and center lanes remained closed. Emergency crews continued working to remove the debris and investigate the crash.
