Employment laws in Massachusetts:

• It is against state and federal law to discriminate against an employee based on a protected class, such as race, religion, disability, pregnancy or age.
• No employer may retaliate against an employee for a protected class; nor may an employer retaliate against a worker for reporting legal or ethical violations.
• Every employer in Massachusetts must pay workers at least the state, county or federal minimum wage (whichever is greater). Starting from January 1, 2023, the minimum wage stands at $15.00 per hour, with a service rate of $6.75 applicable to workers earning over $20 monthly in tips and providing services directly to customers.
• All employees must receive mandatory 30-minute meal breaks (unpaid) during shifts of more than six hours. The law does not include mandatory rest breaks.
• Most employers must provide certain employee benefits and time off, including sick leave and parental leave.
