Early on a busy South Boston morning, a fatal accident occurred at the intersection of Traveler Street and Frontage Road where a 57-year-old man, Fernando R. Pizarro, was struck by a cement truck while crossing the street in his wheelchair. The Massachusetts State Police are currently investigating the incident.

Fernando Pizarro, previously afflicted by homelessness, was crossing an intersection teeming with traffic when the collision occurred. A 2020 Mack Granite truck, operated by a company in the business of concrete and aggregates, was involved in the accident just as the light changed and the traffic began to move. Witnesses, including other motorists and pedestrians, watched the catastrophic event unfold before them.

The truck’s driver, a 53-year-old man from Medford, was questioned by the police and is said to be cooperating with the investigation. The Massachusetts State Police have reported that so far there is no indication of impairment or distraction as factors in this incident. Currently, there have been no criminal charges reported in connection with this case.

The aftermath of the collision caused widespread disruption. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation noted significant delays as traffic came to a standstill, prompting a recommendation for drivers to seek alternative routes. Efforts to clear the scene and ease traffic were swiftly initiated by MassDOT, yet the congestion persisted for some time, causing considerable inconvenience.
